Question:
I’m wondering what’s more effective for my teenage child: Short, frequent positive comments or a long Thank You speech?
Answer:
Short, positive comments throughout the day—like “I like how you problem-solved!” or “Thanks for helping clean up!”—work wonders because they offer real-time reinforcement. Kids thrive when they can immediately connect their actions to praise, which motivates them to keep up the good behavior.
That said, a longer, heartfelt thank-you speech is great for special moments—like finishing a big project or sticking with something challenging. These speeches help kids reflect on their efforts and feel proud, but too many of them can lose their meaning.
The key is to find a balance: sprinkle in quick, specific praise daily to keep them motivated, and save longer “Thank Yous” for big milestones. This way, kids feel seen and appreciated both in the moment and over time, helping them grow with confidence and self-esteem.
Have a positive and uplifting week!
