How to have a successful school year

(1-minute read)

Here is a social story for an incoming 9th grader who had to work hard on her school and home behavior, as well as her social skills, over the last few months in order to get accepted into a high school.

I asked her to tell me which behaviors were a problem for her in elementary school, and we included those behaviors on our list.

These are the reds and greens in school:

  1. Being respectful vs. disrespectful
  2. Following school rules vs. breaking rules
  3. Being on time vs. being late
  4. Being responsible vs. irresponsible
  5. Studying for tests vs. not studying
  6. Doing my homework vs. not doing my homework
  7. Being nice to the girls in my class vs. being mean
  8. Participating in the lesson vs. not participating
  9. Being where I’m supposed to be vs. being in the wrong place
  10. Doing what I’m asked to do vs. doing whatever I want
  11. Having a positive attitude vs. having a negative attitude
  12. Being relevant and on topic in class vs. switching the topic
  13. Reading body language and getting the cues vs. ignoring body language
  14. Staying quiet vs. challenging authority
  15. Talking to kids at recess vs. talking to kids in middle of class

I look forward to having a wonderful school year.
