In Memory of Rabbi Meir Chaim Gutfreund zt”l
Last night, just as I was about to begin teaching my course, I learned of the passing of Rabbi Meir Chaim Gutfreund zt”l. A Master Mechanech (educator), he epitomized warmth, caring, and a deep commitment to every student’s growth, both educationally and personally.
Over 21 years ago, I witnessed his extraordinary dedication when one of my clients, who was a student in The Cheder, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Although he was the principal of a yeshiva consisting of several hundred students, Rabbi Gutfreund didn’t just delegate; he participated in our weekly meetings and actively partnered with the student’s family and specialists, even personally attending our team meeting with a traumatic brain injury expert in Manhattan to better understand how to help his Talmid (student).
On a personal level, I will always be grateful for the chinuch (educational) advice he shared with me about my own children. His wisdom and insight helped guide me during critical moments in their education.
Having worked closely with Rabbi Gutfreund for the past 21 years, I saw firsthand his tireless dedication to each student and his unwavering commitment to their success. He knew each student individually, and his assessment of their needs and challenges was always spot on!
Rabbi Gutfreund’s ability to see each student as an individual, and his unwavering support during their challenges, leaves a legacy of compassion and excellence in education. I will miss him deeply and I’m grateful for the incredible opportunity and honor of having been able to learn from this legendary Mechanech.
